New Past, Old Future

Designing a brand layered with people’s memories was a significant responsibility. Since the architectural design was already finalized when the project began, there weren’t many options for shaping the brand concept. We worked on adapting a 60-year-old brand to a new building while ensuring the existing brand identity remained intact. Guided by the idea of "a new past, an old future," we strove to maintain a balanced approach throughout the entire design process.

Behind the Brand

While archiving Haeundae Amso Galbi, we witnessed the invisible efforts of many team members who work tirelessly to bring the food to the customers' tables. Initially, the goal was to document the 60-year-old tiled house, but through interviews with staff members who have worked there for over 30 years, we were able to capture the history of Haeundae Amso Galbi and use their hopes and dreams to envision its future. Over the course of a year, we meticulously archived the tiled house before its demolition and the objects within it, some of which were later integrated into the new space.

Reinterpretation Not Replication

Haeundae Amso Galbi's logo has evolved and transformed over time, with numerous versions being used simultaneously. To deliver a consistent brand image, we consolidated the existing logos into a unified logo type. Noticing that all the previous logos were based on the Hunminjeongeum Hangul typeface, we focused on its structural elements rather than the characters themselves, developing a logo type that reflects a more sculptural and modern interpretation of this classic style.

Over the course of a year, as we witnessed the construction of a new building, we experienced a range of emotions. While the new construction was an efficient solution to address the inconveniences of the old building, it also made the things we had lost during the process more apparent. When customers visited the new building, we often saw them longing for the old tiled house. At times, we wondered if, in fact, it was the inefficient and inconvenient choices that were necessary to preserve the essence of the brand. The emotions people experienced at Haeundae Amso Galbi were likely not just about the product, but about the memories and feelings associated with the old house. As we reviewed the project, there was a sense of regret. It is from that feeling of loss, and the memories we gathered while traveling between Busan, that we are now preparing the new "home" project for Haeundae Amso Galbi. In this new space, we hope to restore the memories and emotions of Haeundae, Busan.
